Parliament of India – the supreme legislative body of the country.

It comprises of two Houses

  • Lok Sabha (House of the People) and
  • Rajya Sabha (Council of States)

The President of India is the acting head of the Parliament which meets at the Sansad Bhavan, New Delhi.

The President has the power to summon and prorogue either Houses of the Parliament.

The President may also dissolve Lok Sabha upon the advice of the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers.

The people elected or nominated by the President to either house of the Parliament are referred to as the Members of Parliament (MPs).

MPs of the Lok Sabha are elected by the Indian public through casting their vote in the general elections.

Lok Sabha (Lower House) has 545 members including 2 nominees by the President from the Anglo-Indian community.

Eligibility to become an MP (Lok Sabha)

  • Should be a citizen of India
  • Should have completed 25 years of age
  • Should be a registered voter and must be eligible to vote

MPs of the Rajya Sabha are elected by the members of all State Legislative Assembly by proportional representation.

Rajya Sabha (Upper House) has 245 members – 233 elected from States and Union Territories; 12 nominated by the President.

Eligibility to become an MP (Rajya Sabha)

  • Should be a citizen of India
  • Should have completed 30 years of age
  • Should be a registered voter and must be eligible to vote

The Parliament must meet at least twice a year. In India, the parliament conducts three sessions each year.

Budget session: February to May
Monsoon session: July to September
Winter session: November to December

Since 1950, there have been
18 Lok Sabha General elections held.

Casting our vote is not just our right but our responsibility too.

As responsible citizens of the country, let us vote for the right candidate in the elections who can lead India with pride.
